1. FTC Demonstration at Space Day at Able Elementary school in Sarasota - April 9th

I received the following request from the organizers of Space Day in Sarasota.:

Space Day event at Able Elementary school in Sarasota and I am interested in having some FIRST teams, either FRC or FTC, in that area be a participant. The date for this year’s event is Friday April 9th. The general idea with Space Day is that there are multiple activity stations set up around campus all related to math, science, engineering and environmental topics. The kids, by class, rotate through each activity station in 20 minute intervals. If and FRC/FTC team were able to participate we would set them up in just such an activity station where they could talk to the kids about it and perhaps have a short demonstration or other hands on activity. The groups range in size from 20 to 25 students (grades K-5) and are accompanied by their teacher and usually some parent volunteers. So it’s a lot of repetition and it is sometimes a challenge to gear your activity to such a wide range of ages and attention spans. But it is a great event and the kids love it.

Please contact Tom Thaller at THOMAS.F.THALLER@saic.com if your team is interested in participating in Space Day.

2. 2010-11 Qualification Tournaments

Please let me know as soon as possible if your team would like to host a Qualifying Tournament next season. I would like to secure tournament dates before schools start their summer break. Key details concerning hosting a tournament are listed below:

- Host Team receives an invitation to attend the Florida State Championship.
- The FTC State Operating Committee provides the playing field(s).
- Tournament Hosts provide the facility, volunteers, food for volunteers, trophies, judges, practice field, and tournament planning.
- Schools that host events need to coordinate the use of facilities with their athletic department.
- Tournament Hosts may collect registration fees in the range of $25 to $100.
- Single field tournament capacity is 16 teams. Two field tournament capacity is 24 teams.
- The facility needs to be available Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m. Saturday.
- We are planning a tournament schedule for 60 FTC teams. Therefore, we need a minimum of 8 Qualifying Tournaments to assure that teams have the opportunity to participate in at least two qualifying tournaments.
- Available dates are:
-- November 6th
-- November 13th [2009/2010 Tournament Host has right of first refusal for this date.]
-- November 20th
-- December 4th
-- December 11th [2009/2010 Tournament Host has right of first refusal for this date.]
-- December 18th
-- January 8th [2009/2010 Tournament Host has right of first refusal for this date.]
-- January 15th
-- January 22nd
-- January 29th [2009/2010 Tournament Host has right of first refusal for this date.]
-- February 5th [2009/2010 Tournament Host has right of first refusal for this date.]

Send an email to michael.coleman@flfirst.org if you have questions or would like to sign-up to host a qualifying tournament.
