**FTC Mail**SharingFIRST Evaluation

Post by Admin on Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:29 am

From US FIRST:
_________________________
Greetings teams:

We’re looking for feedback on SharingFIRST.org from coaches, mentors and students. A quick 5-minute survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=MwCtexmjv3MlAtJt2ojACw_3d_3d through May 13.

SharingFIRST is supported by a grant from the Engineering Information Foundation (EIF), which has an interest in recruiting girls to the field of engineering. Per the terms of the grant, FIRST was contracted to create a social networking site primarily for girls from all three of our programs. Boys and men are more than welcome to use the site, but as stated in our announcement, the primary focus is on encouraging girls to use the site. We welcome our male participants to use the SharingFIRST, and a number have registered.

Your feedback will help us better serve you and your team through improved communication via the SharingFIRST and other social networking websites.

Before completing the evaluation, please follow the directions below:

1) Read the Recruitment script to your students

2) If they agree to do the survey, give them the Youth Assent form and the Parent Permission form. Both are at the end of this email.

3) Neither the Youth Assent form or the Parent Permission form need to be returned; they are for information only, but must to provided to the students and parents.

Questions? Send an email to KSullivan@usfirst.org.

We would like to thank EIF for their support of FIRST and particularly this project. We hope you’ll tell us what you think about SharingFIRST!

Karen Sullivan

Recruitment script of youth participants for survey:

Please read the following to your students:

An assistant professor in the School of Education at North Dakota State University is conducting an evaluation of the SharingFIRST website to assess the quality and impact of the material posted on the site.

You are invited to participate in this research study. As part of the research procedure, you will be given a 12-item online survey. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

The information for the surveys will allow us to know more about the quality and impact of the website.

As a result of this study, FIRST will be able to better serve its participants through improved communication. Specifically, this website is designed to give leadership and communications skills for the teams and to serve as a social networking site where students and adult team members contribute tutorials, guides and other informative materials on engineering, robotics design and share them with the FIRST community as a whole.

It is your choice whether or not to take part. Even if you say yes now, you can change your mind later, and stop participating. Your decision will have no effect (bad or good) on your participation on the FIRST Robotics team.

Your assistance in this research study will be greatly appreciated.

If you want to take part in the study, take the parent information form and permission form. Review them with your parents. Once they give their approval, you may access the survey.

Parent/Guardian PERMISSION to Participate in Research
SharingFIRST Website Evaluation

Research Study
Your child/legal ward is invited to participate in an evaluation of the quality and impact of the SharingFIRST website as a social networking website being conducted by Dr. Anita G. Welch of the School of Education at North Dakota State University.

Basis for Participant Selection
Your child/legal ward has been selected because their robotics team is a registered user of the SharingFIRST website. He/she will be one of approximately 200-400 students participating in the evaluation.

Purpose of Study
The goal of this evaluation is to assess the quality and impact of the SharingFIRST website in relation to its prescribed goals of proving young women leadership and communication skills for their teams and to create a social networking website where women, both students and adults, contribute tutorials, guides and other informative materials on engineering, robotics design and share them with the FIRST community as a whole.

Explanation of Procedures

Your child will respond to an on-line survey, in which ten questions will be asked regarding their use of the SharingFIRST website. This will be on their time after discussion of the study with you. Two additional questions will ask their age range and gender. They will have the option to skip any questions they do not want to answer and may stop taking the survey at any time.

Potential Risks and Discomforts
It is not possible to identify all potential risks in research procedures, but the researcher has taken reasonable safeguards to minimize any known risks to the participant.

Potential Benefits
Benefits associated with participation in this evaluation are those associated with the acquisition of new knowledge related to participation in FIRST related activities.

Assurance of Confidentiality
The survey will be administered online; no hard copies will be maintained. At no time will students’ names or other forms of individual identification be used in association with the publication of the findings of the evaluation. Data records created by this project are owned by the University and the investigator.

Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal from the Study
Your child/legal ward’s participation is voluntary and he/she can quit at any time. Your decision whether or not to allow your child/legal ward to participate will not affect you or your child/legal ward’s participation in FIRST related activities or any other benefits to which they are otherwise entitled. If you decide to allow your child/legal ward to participate, you are free to withdraw your permission and to discontinue their participation at any time.

Offer to Answer Questions
You and your child/legal ward should feel free to ask questions now or at any time during the study. If you or your child/legal ward has questions about this study, you can contact Dr. Anita G. Welch by phone at 701.231.5498 or through email at anita.welch@ndsu.edu. If you have questions about the rights of human research participants, or wish to report a research-related problem or injury, contact the NDSU IRB Office at (701) 231-8908 or ndsu.irb@ndsu.edu .

Consent Statement
After reviewing the research procedures, discuss them with your child. If you and your child agree to participate in the research study, provide them with the link to the survey, which is enclosed in this packet. By doing so, you are acknowledging that you have read and understand this form and the research project, and are freely agreeing to allow your child/legal ward to be a part of this study. If there are things you do not understand about the study, please ask the researchers before you give your consent. You may keep this form for your records.
