FTC Florida News - May 1, 2009

Hello All,

Thank you for making the Face Off! season fun and exciting. We had a few challenges figuring out how to run competitions with the new FTC Tetrix system and Field Management System. With your help, we made improvements after each competition that resulted in a State Championship that ran smoothly and finished 3 minutes early!

A few key numbers for the Florida Face Off! season are as follows:
- 49 Teams
- 1 Kickoff Event
- 1 Workshop
- 3 State Qualifying Competitions
- 1 Scrimmage
- 1 State Championship

We plan on doing all of the above for the 2009-2010 season plus adding a few more state qualifying competitions and workshops/scrimmages. Please consider hosting an event next season, we need lots of help to run this ambitions program lineup.

Teams that are interested in hosting a state qualifying competition or scrimmage/workshop should file the appropriate paperwork with their school or host site and lock-in the date prior to the end of this school year. You also need to coordinate the date with me so that we don't have any overlapping competitions. Please let me know right away if your team is interested in hosting an event. A few key items concerning state qualifying competitions are as follows:

- Host FTC teams (one per event) receive an automatic invitation to attend the State Championship
- The competition needs to have capacity for 14 teams. Fourteen teams is likely to be the maximum number of teams allowed at a qualifying competition. The minimum size will be between 8 and 10 teams.
- 1-day competition with setup the day before the competition
- FTC kickoff will be in mid-September. Teams should have at least an 8-week build period prior to the first qualifying competition. The last weekend for qualifiers should be February 6th. If there are special circumstances, we will consider qualifiers on the weekends of February 13th and February 20th.
- We should avoid holding competitions the following weekends: December 26 & 27, January 2 & 3.
- The tentative SAT test dates are December 5th and January 23rd. It is best if we avoid these dates.
- The team participation/registration fee should not exceed $75.

I will provide the following for each competition:
- A guide for running a qualification competition
- Access to all FIRST volunteer training documents and training calls
- Playing field, field elements, etc.
- Scoring System Computer
- Referee Jerseys
- Robot Alliance Flags
- Telephone and email consulting
- Team registration system. (optional)

In general, the Event Host provides the following:
- Facility (area for the playing field, pit area, practice field and judging rooms)
- Volunteers, Judges & Referees
- Trophies
- Practice Playing Field
- Audio and Video Systems
